The Newey family, where do we start? Paul was born and raised in the Avenues of Salt Lake City. His parents say he was exemplary in every way. He left home when he entered the MTC right after his 19th birthday for a mission to Lansing, Michigan. After his mission he attended the University of Utah and graduated with a B.S. degree in Finance. Meanwhile, Katrina was raised in northern New York State on a farm about 10 miles from the Canadian border. Her parents allowed her to join the church a few weeks before her 14th birthday. She was one of 5 students in her high school who were members of the church. She graduated and decided to attend BYU where she also obtained a degree.
During Paul’s time at the U he did an internship with IBM in Washington, DC. After Katrina graduated, she took a job with a New York based mortgage company that had its servicing office in SLC. She took additional classes at the U and Paul returned from his internship. They landed in the same student ward at the U. Katrina sometimes joked that she graduated from the Y without being married, so they gave her tuition back. She was surprised at how many people thought she was serious. Katrina kept hearing about a guy named Paul Newey from LOTS of girls. She finally met him in a Ward Correlation meeting and thought, so this is who they’re all talking about. Paul noticed Katrina and thought she had beautiful red hair. He had a thing for red hair. They ended up dating on and off for a few years, or as Katrina puts it, he chased her till she caught him. Everyone who knew them said they would get married, Paul and Katrina just had to figure it out. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple almost 35 years ago. Paul promised Katrina when they got married that he would take her dancing once a year. He hated dancing. This year he’ll owe her 34 dancing dates, but who’s counting? We lived in SLC and then moved to Alpine 26 years ago this September. We have 4 children; our first three children were born while in SLC and our last son was born after moving to Alpine. We believe our daughter and three sons are some of the most amazing, beautiful/handsome, and intelligent people you’d ever meet. They also drive us crazy sometimes but with all the ups and downs we feel really blessed. When our youngest son headed off to college, we took in a young man from Pakistan who came into the US as a refugee. He joined the family during his final year in high school. He was a great addition to the family, and we decided to do it again 3 more times with 3 more boys… another from Pakistan, one from Afghanistan, and the other from Eritrea (it’s in Africa, next to Ethiopia). We helped each of them get through high school and we’ve celebrated with them as they became US citizens and as they have become strong and independent. Our family is colorful, interesting, and fun with our kids, all our foreign sons along with 4 daughters-in-law. All our children except one foreign son live in Utah. Our youngest, Spencer, lives at home with us. Paul has worked in IT for a venture capital firm for the last 20 years. Katrina went back to work after being home for several years, she works in property management. Paul loves to swim, practice nature photography and ski. He has taught our kids, their friends and a bunch of the refugee kids in Utah county how to ski. Katrina loves to garden, read, and cook, specializing in baking different breads and brownies. Her brownies are world famous due to our boys’ missions and foreign sons. Together they love to collect art, look at houses, binge watch favorite shows and spend time with family. Paul is busy serving in the Stake with all the prospective missionaries while Katrina teaches Sunday School. We love our home, our neighborhood and most importantly all the amazing people in the Ward. We’re thankful we can know and enjoy the association of so many terrific people.
